Get Smart – Get Wisdom

2 Chronicles 1:7 NIV
That night God appeared to Solomon and said to him, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.”

2 Chronicles 1:8, 10 NIV
Solomon answered God, “You have shown great kindness to David my father and have made me king in his place. Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?”

2 Chronicles 1:11-12 NIV
God said to Solomon, “Since this is your heart’s desire and you have not asked for wealth, riches or honor, nor for the death of your enemies, and since you have not asked for a long life but for wisdom and knowledge to govern my people over whom I have made you king, therefore wisdom and knowledge will be given you. And I will also give you wealth, riches and honor, such as no king who was before you ever had and none after you will have.”

Listen my son to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.

1st What is wisdom?

1. Wisdom is fearing God

Proverbs 9:10 NIV
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

2. Wisdom is knowing who God is

Proverbs 9:10 NIV
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

3. Wisdom is applying God’s Word to our lives

2nd How will wisdom benefit me?

1. Wisdom will guard and protect you

Proverbs 4:6 NIV
Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you.

Proverbs 4:6 MSG
Never walk away from Wisdom—she guards your life; love her—she keeps her eye on you.

Proverbs 2:12 NIV
Wisdom will save you from the ways of wicked men.

They’ll keep you from making wrong turns, or following bad directions.

2. Wisdom will give you confidence and contentment

Proverbs 14:26 NIV
Whoever fears the LORD has a secure fortress, and for their children it will be a refuge.

The Fear-of-GOD builds up confidence, and makes a world safe for your children.

Proverbs 19:23 NIV
The fear of the LORD leads to life: Then one rests content, untouched by trouble.

3. Wisdom will bring honor and financial blessing

Proverbs 3:4 NIV
Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.

Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor.

Esteem her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you.

Above all and before all, do this: Get Wisdom! Write this at the top of your list: Get Understanding! Throw your arms around her—believe me, you won’t regret it; never let her go—she’ll make your life glorious.

4. Wisdom will build your home

Proverbs 24:3 NIV
By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established;

1. By listening for it

1 Kings 3:9 NIV
So give you servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong

2. Building relationships with wise people

Proverbs 13:20 NIV
He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.

3. Regularly reading the Bible

Psalm 19:7 NIV
The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.

4. By asking God to give you wisdom

James 1:5 NIV
If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.

5. By giving your life to Christ

Matthew 12:42 NIV
The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now one greater than Solomon is here.

Colossians 2:2c-3 NIV
that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
